5 uplifting songs to beat the January gloom on Blue Monday

Blue Monday isn’t just a seminal 1980s hit from New Order. It is also the title given to what is supposedly the calendar year’s most depressing day. Not to alarm you, but we are but days away from it. Monday 20th January is apparently going to be the day in which that one mince pie too many, the unopened credit card bill, the bitter cold and return to reality after a hazy Christmas break can all get to be too much.

Fear not, we can always depend upon the rousing power of pop music, and as Pharrell’s Happy is back at number one, we thought we’d pick out a few more songs to lift you out of those January blues!

Frank Wilson Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)

Surely one of the loveliest songs of all time. It will fill your heart with joy and make you want to dance all your troubles away.

Chic- Everybody Dance

Is there anything in life more uplifting than disco?

Modest Mouse- Float On

A song about taking the breezy, positive approach to everyday problems which sounds every bit as life-affirming as all the very best pop music should. We’ll all float on alright indeed.

Duke Dumont- Need U (100%)

This infectiously bouncy house hit from Duke Dumont has all the ingredients of a ‘feelgood’ song, and A*M*E’s vocals are so full of cheer that it’s hard not to feel on top of the world listening to it.

Eels- Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues

“It’s a beautiful day!” sings Eels frontman Mark Oliver Everett. It seemed fitting then, that when I saw this live a gorgeous double rainbow appeared above him. Put this on and sing along… see? It IS a beautiful day afterall!
