CANOEING and cricket figured strongly when the 2011 Sport Stafford Borough sports awards were handed out at the annual presentation evening on Friday.
The Staffordshire Newsletter sponsored event attracted one of its biggest entries for several years, fitting in what is London Olympic year, and it was two Team GB hopefuls who walked away with the Sports Performer of the Year trophies.
Both Lizzie Neave and Joe Clarke are members of Stafford and Stone Canoe Club and are currently in training for the GB Olympic selection event next month. They picked up the respective female and male awards.
Fellow club mate, Jasmine Royle was also among the awards. The young Great Britain junior internatonal, who won silver at last year's European Junior and U23 Championships in Bosnia, received the female U18 Sports Performer award.
In cricket, Milford Hall's Will Davis, who has just returned from a tour to India with the elite England Development Programme squad, won the male U18 trophy, while Aston CC's Sarah Gough, who enjoyed a superb 2011 season and captained the Staffs girls under-17 squad, went home with the Most Improved Sports Performer of the Year award.
Trophies were presented in no fewer than ten categories and supporting this year's event were Hixon Airfield Services and Sandon Road Motors (Stafford). There was also a new Sports Person of the Year award in memory of Stafford athlete Clare Skelton, who died of cancer last year.
