UNDER-FIRE Chase MP Aidan Burley has announced he will stand down at the next general election in the wake of the scandal around his involvement in a nazi-themed stag party in 2011.

In a statement on his website, Mr Burley said it had been a ‘huge privilege’ to represent the people of Cannock Chase since his election in May 2010.

“I am proud to have been able to deliver many positive things for our area since our election success, including spearheading the campaign to save Cannock Chase Hospital from the administrators axe, running four local jobs fairs to help get people back into work, and securing £35million to electrify the Chase Line,” he said. “That is what really matters to local people in their day to day lives.”

Mr Burley said after ‘a difficult time’ he had decided to withdraw before the next election but would continue to work for the people of Cannock Chase until the election and support his successor as soon as they were selected.
