THE sudden weekend heatwave greeted the runners of Sunday’s Westbridge 5 mile race at Stone.

But despite the high temperatures, 217 runners started out in conditions more suited to spectating than running to battle with towpaths, lanes and footpaths in this multi-terrain race,

Winner for the second year running was Ben Gamble (pictured) of Tipton Harriers in 26.21 with first lady Michelle Buckle of Newcastle (Staffs) AC in 33.05.

Stone Master Marathoners fielded 14 runners with Mick Downes first in for the club in 32.48.
