STAFFORD and Stone residents can find out more about proposed changes to council tax benefits at an open day next week.

Benefit experts will be on hand to explain new rules to residents 2pm-4pm at the Civic Centre in Stafford on Tuesday and Wednesday

The Government has abolished council tax benefit from April but Stafford Borough Council has agreed a new scheme to help people pay their bills.

Pensioners will continue to get the same level of help, the

unemployed who have previously had bills paid in full will have to pay at least 20 per cent and some low-wage earners will have to pay at least 20 per cent.

Some extra help will be avail- able for the most vulnerable residents and up to 100 per cent support will be available to severely disabled taxpayers and families with children under five.

The new rules will also restrict the amount of housing benefit.

If residents have more bedrooms than needed their payments will be cut.
