CANNOCK Chase MP Aidan Burley said Monitor’s announcement that Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust was ‘unsustainable in its current form’ proved accusations of ‘scaremongering’ over the future of the trust were unfounded.
Responding to the announcement, which has cast serious doubt over the future of the hospital trust which runs both Stafford and Cannock hospitals, Mr Burley said Monitor’s announcement rubber stamped the fears that had been expressed by residents over the future of the trust.
"I am pleased that Monitor are undertaking such a comprehensive review to ensure NHS services are clinically and financially sustainable for the long term,” he said. “Accusations of 'scaremongering' about the future of Mid Staffs Trust have been proved as without foundation, since Monitor themselves have now concluded that the Trust is no longer viable in its current form.”
He said the people of Cannock Chase would be less concerned by the management structure, and more concerned by the need to retain services at the hospital which he said had ‘slowly been whittled away over the last 10 years’.
“Sadly, we have now reached the stage that our hospital has been threatened with closure, so I will welcome any proposal that reverses that trend and gives Cannock Chase Hospital a secure future, fully utilised, within the NHS."
