A CAT had a lucky escape after he was shot by yobs with an air rifle in Eccleshall.

Blue, who lives in the Romford Meadow area, was left with a pellet lodged between his lungs.

His worried owners found him cowering under the bed with a hole in his side after returning home from his usual nightly roam.

They rushed him to the vets where he had an operation and he has since been recovering at home.

His owner, who has asked not to be named, said: "The vet said he had been shot with an air rifle and told us he was lucky the pellet had missed his diaphragm and heart. It has been so upsetting to think that someone could do this.

"Blue goes out most nights and then comes back in the morning. We do feel worried now when he goes out. It has been very upsetting but we are just thankful that Blue is ok."

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said they were appealing for witnesses to the shooting, thought to have happened between 1am and 7pm on July 27, to get in touch.

The spokesman said: "The incident was reported and a vet confirmed the cat had been shot with an air rifle.

"There have been no other similar incidents in Eccleshall."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident number 179.
