CRICKET legend and former winner of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing Darren Gough has rubbished claims he is set to stand as a Conservative party candidate in Cannock Chase.

The retired English cricketer’s name was suggested over the weekend as a possible replacement for Aidan Burley, who announced last week he would be standing down before the next election citing ‘difficult’ recent times and coming in the wake of a report into his involvement in a nazi-themed stag party in 2011.

The Newsletter contacted Mr Gough via social media site Twitter, seeking confirmation of a report he would stand for the soon to be vacated seat and asking for a comment.

Mr Gough’s reply was short but sweet.

“Load or rubbish,” he tweeted.
