WHEN most people celebrate the New Year the last thing they are thinking about is where their running shoes are but for one Stafford man January 1 is the first day of a momentous challenge.

Daniel Furze, 24, is no stranger to endurance challenges having completed 10 charity challenges this year, but in 2013 he will top them all by attempting to run 2013 miles in one year, all in the name of charity.

“In 2012 I took part in charity events including half marathons, a marathon, abseiling and other physical challenges in order to raise over £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support and The British Red Cross,” said Daniel.

“In 2013 I intend to run 2013 miles in total in order to raise money for Make-AWish Foundation, Medecins Sans Frontieres and The British Red Cross.”

But Daniel isn’t planning on going it alone and has enlisted the help of friends, family and members of the community to help him in his epic personal challenge.

“My mission is to get people active and involved in the year-long event by encouraging everyone - young, old, active and inactive, those who enjoy running and those who have never run - to come alongside me for part of my journey; it can be anything from one to 100 miles, whatever they’re happy with.”

Having already recruited support from local school children, a dance troupe, firefighters and the Armed Forces, Daniel is urging others to get involved and help him complete his long-distance challenge.

“My current plans are to train and run in races across the UK and in Europe, and I want to inspire people to take part during various stages of the event with me to give their moral support, to enjoy themselves and most of all to raise the money that the charities need together.”

The Newsletter will be following Daniel throughout the year as he aims to complete his challenge, but you can share his experiences online by following his blog at www.2013in2013.co.uk, where he’ll be posting pictures, videos and his thoughts as well as keeping a running total of the amount raised for charity.
