AN ANIMAL lover was horrified to discover a dead dog in a canal near Rugeley.

The animal was discovered in the Trent and Mersey Canal at Armitage by villager Chaz Martin on Friday night.

Mr Martin, 53, who has four dogs of his own, said he spotted the creature again on Saturday and contacted police.

“I was walking along the canal on Friday night and saw something that I thought was a bird”, he said.

“I had another look on Saturday and it looked like a dog. I remembered seeing a missing dog poster in the chip shop so I walked to the chip shop to get the number.

“As I was walked nearer (to the canal) I saw two people from the Canal and River Trust and they said they were going to get it out.

“When they pulled out the dog it didn’t have a collar on and it was a different kind of dog to the poster. It looked like a terrier.”

“I was horrified and sad - it could have been someone’s pet.”

A Lichfield District Council spokesperson said the council had been made aware of the dog.

The canal is managed by the Canal and River Trust.
