A PAIR of dogs stranded on a ledge next to a fast-flowing river in Stafford were rescued by fire fighters.
The dogs became trapped under the railway bridge by fields next to Brooklime Gardens in Doxey on Sunday after going for a swim.
The owner had tried to rescue them but got into trouble himself so climbed out and called the fire service at around 12.20pm. Fire crews used a rescue sled, which is a small inflatable boat, to reach the dogs.
Stafford Fire Station manager Neil Burton said: “While it is understandable that any animal owner would want to rescue their pet if it became stranded, you must think of the risks that you face if you do try to take action.
“I would urge people to always call the fire service in the event of this type of incident. We have the expert knowledge and specialist equipment to carry out these rescues in a safe and considered manner, without putting lives in danger.”
