A ECCLESHALL schoolboy is the newly crowned Staffordshire Junior Chess champion.

Lewis Clarke won the title with an impressive six wins in six matches.

The turning point in the tournament was in match four where he was playing black against Alexander Jarvis (Rushall), who is graded 114 to Clarke on 105.

At this stage, Clarke managed a check against white while trapping white’s bishop which ultimately led to the victory. He then won the remaining two matches.

Clarke was up against England junior team players and the standard was very high so this was an impressive result for the Eccleshall player.
