Eccleshall and surrounds - week beginning December 19

SANTA IN THE LIBRARY: Santa Claus visited the library on Friday December 13 for the youngsters regular Baby Bounce Friday session. He was able to distribute some small gifts for the children.

ECCLESHALL SINGERS: A small but appreciative audience attended the Christmas Concert given by the Singers in the Holy Trinity Church on Saturday December 7.They also gave a concert at Cheswardine Hall and appeared in the St Mary's Church, Derrington on Tuesday December 17. Rehearsals for the new year start on Tuesday January 7 at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church, Stone Road, Eccleshall. If you would like to join them please pop along.

SCHOOL CAROL CONCERT: The Bishop Lonsdale School will be holding its annual carol concert in the Holy Trinity Church tonight Thursday December 19 starting at 6pm. We are welcome to attend.

WINDOW COMPETITION: The shop windows will be judged today Thursday December 19 by three local judges and the Business Group Trophy will be awarded to the winning entry. Certificates will be awarded to the runners up.

CAROL SERVICE: The united carol service will take place at the Holy Trinity Church on Sunday December 22 starting at 6.30pm. The town's churches join together for this annual service which is always well attended.

CHRISTMAS QUIZ: A special Christmas Quiz takes place at the kings Arms this Sunday December 22 starting at 8.30pm. Entrance if £1 per person and there are cash and gift prizes for the winning teams and the tie breaker winners. Quiz master Peter Jones will be finding a range of difficult questions mingled with seasonal specials. There is a regular quiz which takes place at the Kings every Sunday starting at 8.30pm open to the public.

CAROLS ROUND THE TREE: Mince pies and hot drinks are served in the Holy Trinity parish room after a parade of carollers through the town on Monday December 23 starting at 7.30pm from the cross roads. The carollers pause at spots along the High Street to serenade the residents with carols. They finally stop at the lych gate and sing a number of carols before adjourning to the parish room. We are all invited to take part.

CHURCH SERVICES: On Sunday December 22 there is Holy Communion at 8am, Morning Praise at 10am at Holy Trinity Church and a Service of Lessons at St Chad's at 11.30am. At 9.15am there is a Mass at Sacred Heart Church and at 10.30am at the Methodist Church a Morning service.

On Christmas Eve December 24 at3pm there is the blessing of the Crib and at 11.30pm Midnight Eucharist at Holy Trinity. Rev Neil Adams leads a candle light service at the Methodist Church on Christmas Eve between 7.30 and 8.30pm followed by mince pies.

On Christmas day December 25 at 8am Holy Communion, at 10am Christmas Eucharist at Holy Trinity and at 11.30am a Christmas Communion at St Chad's. At 9.15am at Scared Heart there is a Mass and at 9.30am there is a Family Communion Service at the Methodist Church.

We are all most welcome to any of the services to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Broughton services will be held on December 22 at 11am with a carol service and at 2.30 a carol service with the Methodists at Croxton. On Tuesday December 24 at 11.30pm Midnight mass at Broughton and on December 25 at 11.15am a Holy Communion at Croxton.

SANTA IN ECCLESHALL: The Rotary Club of Eccleshall Mercia will be accompanied Santa in his sleigh in Eccleshall on Monday December 23 starting at 5.30pm - 7.30pm for the West Side of town (Newport Road etc). On Tuesday December 24 the East Side of town (Stone Road etc) will be visited between 4pm and 6pm. His elves will be collected for various Rotary charities and local causes and appeal for you support. www.eccleshallrotary.com.

PLANNING COMMITTEE: At the meeting of the parish Planning Committee the members had no objection to two applications but objected to the demolition of a summer house and the erection of a timber holiday chalet in Garmelow Lane.

The next meting will be held on Wednesday January 8 at the community centre at 7.30pm. There will be a presentation prior to the meeting from Linford C-Zero proposing a development at Cold Meece starting at 7pm.

LIBRARY OPENING DAYS: The library will be closed on December 25 and 26 and open on Tuesday 24 9am - 1pm, Friday 27 9am - 5pm, Saturday 28 9am - 4pm.

POETRY GROUP: Meets at the library today Thursday December 19 between 2pm and 4pm with the theme of Christmas session - a taste of something good.

WALTON HALL CAROLS: The Walton Hall school has carols in Holy Trinity tomorrow Friday December 20 starting at 10am.

GUIDES CAROLS: The Guides carol service takes place in Holy trinity on Saturday December 21 starting at 5pm.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS: Bishop Lonsdale School breaks up for the Christmas holiday on Friday December 20 and restarts on January 6.

NEW ARTISAN PROPRIETORS: The Artisan is now under new management with David and Wendy Wiggins becoming the new proprietors.


CAROL SINGING: Carol singers have been out around Standon and Bowers over the last two weeks and will be performing at Standon Hall Nursing Home on Monday, meeting at 5pm. Children joining in with carol singing must be accompanied by an adult.

ALL SAINTS' FIRST SCHOOL: Recent PTFA fundraisers including the Christmas fayre, raffles, disco and cake sale have raised over £1269.

CHURCH SERVICES: On Christmas Eve at 9pm St James' Church, Cotes Heath Holy Communion will be held. Midnight Holy Communion will begin at 11.30pm at All Saints' Church, Standon.
