THE new Mayor of Stafford Borough will be keeping it in the family when his famous uncle Engelbert Humperdinck visits him during the mayoral year.
Councillor Ray Sutherland, who takes office this week, is the nephew of the crooner, best known for the songs Release Me and The Last Waltz for representing Britain in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.
Councillor Sutherland, 68, will take over as Mayor on Saturday as the borough marks 400 years of the Mayoralty.
He said: “I am very honoured to be the Mayor and looking forward to promoting all the good things that happen in our area - especially the work of the many thousands of volunteers who make such a difference to the borough.
“At the same time I will be raising thousands of pounds for my chosen charities during the 12 months which I know will go towards improving lives for those less fortunate.
“Obviously, I understand my uncle is a very busy person so when we met up recently, I extended an open invitation to him and I am pleased to say he will be visiting Stafford during my Mayoral term. I really want him to see what a brilliant area Stafford Borough is and how proud I am to be its Mayor.”
