STAFFORD folk are being asked to support a bid to give the Staffordshire Regiment mascot Watchman V the freedom of Stafford.
The call comes from the regimental association after council bosses in Tamworth gave the Staffordshire bull terrier the freedom of the borough.
A petition has been launched asking people to lobby Stafford Borough Council to award the freedom of the borough to Watchman V and his handler WO2 Hedges.
Association chairman Dave Lovell said it would ensure the regiment’s history and heritage would be kept alive.
“We need to get the county town of Stafford to offer him the freedom of the borough.
“It keeps the Stafford knot alive and the history of the Staffordshire Regiment, the troops who have gone before us who died in battle, it tells the generals and people in high and mighty places Staffordshire Regiment will not be forgotten.
“By keeping Watchman on parade that ensures the history of the regimental badge doesn’t get forgotten and trashed.
“Tamworth have taken the lead and offered this honour .”
The petition will be on the Newsletter website, www.staffordshirenewsletter.co.uk, in the next few days
