FORMER Staffordshire Regiment and Staffordshire Regimental Association Mascot, Watchman IV will be buried in a formal ceremony outside Burton Town hall on Wednesday at midday.

The burial will follow a short service and is open to all members of the Regimental family both serving and retired and anyone connected to The Staffordshire or Mercian Regiments.

Secretary of the Staffordshire Regiment Association Jim Massey said: “Watchman IV was a very, very patient dog. He would go to functions where he was surrounded by children petting and stroking him and he never rose or got cross with it.

“He was 15 years old when he died, which is old for a dog and even older for a Staffie, who usually live until they are 10 or 12.

Mr Massey said as sad as everyone had been at Watchman’s death, they preferred to celebrate his life than mourn his passing.”

His handler, Colour Sergeant Malcolm Bower died before him and Malcolm’s widow, Coral has looked after him in his final four years, spent in retirement after handing over duties to Watchman V.
