A GIANT housing development at St Thomas Priory, Baswich is a “price worth paying” for improving local roads, a county councillor has claimed.
But traffic-clogged Baswich Lane could be set to become part of Stafford’s bypass as part of the deal.
The comment comes as the borough deals with a raft of applications for new homes from developers.
Delays in publishing a local plan - a planning blueprint for the next 20 years - have been blamed.
Many fear the town will be left struggling, especially with the loss of acute hospital services adding to the woes.
John Francis told a Baswich Community Group meeting up to 600 houses could be built on land around St Thomas Priory if Stafford Borough Council’s local development framework is approved.
As part of any deal the developers would be expected to contribute to building the next phase of the eastern distributor road, from the fire station at Beaconside to St Thomas’s Mill. A major new housing development was the only way money could be found to finance road-building, Councillor Francis said.
“What upsets me is that we have had all these housing developments around the town over the years with no improvement to the infrastructure,” he said.
“We are all concerned about extra housing putting pressure on services, but this particular development seems to be the price worth paying to get this major road.”
If the St Thomas Priory scheme went ahead the county council would then seek government funding to link the new road with Baswich Lane.
“But that, I’m afraid, will be it,” Councillor Francis said.
”The new road will stop at the bottom of Baswich Lane, which will be upgraded, and it will in effect become the distributor road.”
