A FORMER Great Haywood resident who penned cartoons for the Newsletter as boy has been knighted for services to his country.

Military officer John James Bowerman-Kemp, 45, became a Sir last month. Prince Charles performed the honours at Buckingham Palace and the event was also attended by Sir John’s wife Catherine and children Joseph, seven, and Olivia, nine.

His mother Marina Bowerman-Kemp, who now lives in Hixon, said: “He used to do cartoons for the Newsletter in the late 1970s and early 80s and he attended Weston Road High School. He joined up when he was 20 and I am so proud of him.”
