UP-AND-COMING Stafford shopkeepers are getting a helping hand from bosses at a town centre retail complex.

Managers at the Guildhall Shopping Centre have taken back responsibility for booking retail management units from external agencies to combat rising prices they felt were a barrier for local traders.

Marketing manager Anna Graham said: “We always like to help up-and-coming retailers, for example by providing space for pop-up shops, and wanted to take that philosophy onto our malls.

“We’ve had a lot of repeat business for the retail management units, from national brands and companies like solicitors and utility providers, but we want to bring more variety and vibrancy to the centre,” she said. “We think bringing in some new, local businesses, and giving them a chance to get going without incurring huge overheads will help us to do that.”

She said she hoped the move would particularly help new businesses who had not had the chance to trade in a shopping centre before.

In addition, five other, smaller promotional spaces have been created in the centre for traders to use their own display stands and equipment.

Prices for the units start at £200+VAT per week with traders required to provide proof of £5million public liability insurance cover.
