A VILLAGE pub near Stone has been saved from closure at the eleventh hour - and its new landlord’s spicy approach to dinnertime is proving a hit.
Hilderstone’s only pub, The Roebuck, came close to last orders for the second time in a year back in June when its previous incumbents, villagers Julie and Phil Dale who took it on in December 2012, were unable to continue.
But Phil Conliffe, who was managing the pub on behalf of the Dales, was able to strike a deal with owners Admiral Taverns and is now running The Roebuck with his wife Humyra.
One of the ways they have managed to attract new customers in the past few weeks draws on Humyra’s Bangladeshi heritage, Phil said.
“We now run a curry night on Tuesdays and Fridays and Humyra cooks traditional, authentic Bangladeshi curry using recipes from her family and community,” he said.
“It’s really taken off well; we started three weeks ago and we’re getting the same people returning.
“We also have an acoustic night on Thursdays, and karaoke every other week on Saturdays.”
The pub will be hosting a live music night, featuring comedy, original songs and covers from Stone Cold Sober(ish) on September 21 from 9pm which is hoped will be the first of many similar events.
Any acts interested in performing at the Roebuck should call Phil on 01889 505349.
