James makes impressive progress

Becky James advanced to the women's sprint quarter-finals in supreme fashion on day three of the Track Cycling World Championships in Minsk.

The 21-year-old from Abergavenny, who won team sprint bronze and 500 metres time-trial bronze on the opening two days, was the only rider to dip beneath 11 seconds in qualifying.

Her flying 200m time of 10.957 seconds meant she was the top seed and earned a first-round bye, before she dispensed with Lisandra Guerra Rodriguez in the second round.

The Cuban had knocked out James' team-mate Vicky Williamson in the first round.

While James advanced with minimal effort, Jason Kenny required two opportunities to progress in the men's Keirin.

In an event taking place in the absence of defending world champion and Olympic gold medal winner Sir Chris Hoy, who is taking a sabbatical as he weighs up his future, Britain were represented by three-time Olympic champion Kenny and Matt Crampton.

The pair were drawn in the same heat, with only two riders to progress at the first time of asking and they were squeezed out of contention, finishing fifth and third, respectively, to fall into the repechage. There were four Keirin repechage heats, with only the first rider advancing to the second round, effectively the semi-final, from each.

Kenny and Crampton were again drawn in the same heat, meaning only one could advance. Kenny took the initiative entering the final lap and had enough pace to hold off his challengers as Holland's Hugo Haak finished second and Crampton third. Crampton will now turn his attention to the men's sprint this weekend.

After two of the six-disciplines in the men's omnium, Briton Jon Dibben lies 11th with 18 points. In the opening event, the flying lap, Dibben was 11th in 13.587 as Aaron Gate of New Zealand won in 13.109.

The 120-lap (30-kilometre) points race was won by defending omnium world champion Glenn O'Shea of Australia with 18 points. Olympic champion Lasse Norman Hansen claimed 14 points to place second and take the overall lead alongside O'Shea. Dibben scored five points to place 11th.
