THE Stafford-born police officer shot by gunman Raoul Moat had an affair with 7/7 bombing survivor Lisa French in the months before he died, it has emerged.

An inquest into PC David Rathband's death began yesterday, two years after his body was discovered at his home in Blyth, Northumberland.

The 43-year-old was left blind and fighting for his life after killer Moat shot him twice while he was on the run in July 2010.

Moat had earlier shot and injured his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart and shot dead her new partner Chris Brown, before shooting himself in a stand-off with police on a river bank in Rothbury, Northumberland.

Yesterday’s hearing in Newcastle heard how PC Rathband had had several affairs but wife Kath had always taken him back.

But the affair with Lisa French proved too much for Mrs Rathband, and she declined to discuss a reconciliation with her husband.

The disabled officer could not understand why Mrs Rathband would not take him back, and would call her up to 100 times a day, she told the inquest.

He phoned her to say she would ‘never see him again’ shortly before his death.

PC Rathband’s family claim he was “let down by the people that could have prevented his death”.
