SEVERAL athletes from Cannock and Stafford Athletic Club recorded excellent performances at Leamington on Saturday.
They were competing in the annual Midland cross country championships.
Best individual performance came from Iris Davies in the under 13 girls who finished a brilliant fifth place, gaining fast in the final 50 metres to cross the line just one second behind the fourth place runner.
Davies, lying in second place in the West Midlands League, had further big city clubs to contend with this time such as Leicester AC, Derby AC and Bristol AC so her effort this time was a great achievement.
With big expectations from the team as well it went disastrously wrong when one member failed to turn up on time.
As a result, C and S could only field three members, instead of the counting four, with Molly Shermer finishing 42nd and Isabelle Kelly 54th. it was reckoned that had the Staffordshire club been at full strength it would have been close between themselves and City of Stoke, who beat the former three times in the North Staffs League for third place.
C and S under 13 boys were very unlucky in the team event as they finished in fourth place only 18 points down on the third place team.
Harrison Hardy-Smith led the way for the local club in 11th place, ahead of James Boote 22nd , Bill Chesters 32nd and Kyle Haycock 59th.
In the senior men's race, C and S were represented by three athletes, the race attracting almost 400 runners.
And they had to contend with a thunderstorm, heavy rain and strong winds that affected large parts of the Midlands.
However, Chris Perrin produced a fantastic run to finish 11th overall with twin brother James in 51st and Aaron Bullock 171st..
Entries are now being accepted for the annual Donna Louise Children's Hospice tenth 10k race and 5k family fun run, at Trentham Gardens on May 11 (10am).
As with many fun run events, entrants have the option of competing in fancy dress.
There are also special prizes for the best dressed fancy dress individual as well as the best fancy dress team.
All finishers will go home with a special race medal for their efforts.
