A STAFFORD athlete has qualified to represent Great Britain in the Age Group Euro 2014 Duathlon Championship.
It was a great weekend of racing for Stafford Triathlon Club (STC) who can now boast a Great Britain squad duathlete amongst its ranks.
Qualifying took place at the well-known Oulton Park race track, with the organisers expecting quick times in the sprint distance event due to it being a traffic free race in almost perfect weather conditions.
Representing STC were Caroline Austen and Martin Tolley and both were looking to join the GBR age group ranks for next year’s Euro Championships with the former completing her first 4.3km run in 17m 30secs.
After a super smooth transition onto the bike, Austen managed to hit her impressive target time of 37mins 30secs for the 21.6km distance.
“I knew I was just ahead of some great athletes coming into the second transition and by now really wanted to qualify more than ever,” said Austen.
This proved to be the driving force to see her through the testing second 4.3km run which she managed in just
18min 19secs. “Looking at my watch I knew
I had beaten my overall target by nearly 5 minutes, but I never expected to get second place and had to double check the results!!!”
But second spot it was with a GB duathlon place coming with a place on the podium.
Tolley also excelled coming in fourth place in his age group. But he will have to wait on other race results to see if he will get a coveted GB team slot for 2014.
Tolley is one of the clubs BTF qualified coaches and played a big role in Austen’s qualification bid. “I’d like to thank Martin for all his superb coaching and we've all got our fingers crossed that his time will prove good enough for 2014 qualification too,” said Austen.
