CONTROVERSIAL Conservative politician Aidan Burley has been reselected to stand for his party.

Mr Burley received the unanimous backing of his group at a specially-convened meeting on Friday.

Members of the reselection committee said he had set a new standard as a constituency MP.

Mr Burley, who attended a Nazithemed stag party which is still under investigation by French police, will defend the Cannock Chase seat in the general election which is scheduled to take place in 2015.

He took the seat from Labour in 2010 with the largest swing in the country.

Speaking after the meeting, association chairman Phil Jones said: “I am delighted that Aidan will once again be our candidate at the next election.

“There was an overwhelming feeling that since 2010 he has set a new standard as a constituency MP.” The committee heard Mr Burley’s achievements had included jobs fairs, business awards and volunteering with local organisations. He also battled to preserve the Chase and improvements to the Chase railway line.

Mr Burley said: “I should like to thank the members for their massive vote of confidence. I must also thank my team in the help zone who I believe have brought a new dimension to how an MP can help and support constituents.

“Much has been achieved in the last three years but there are always more challenges to face, as the events of the last week have proved. I hope that I will able to continue facing them for the people of Rugeley through to 2020 and beyond.”
