STAFFORDSHIRE Police have named the man who died in Highfields in the early hours of Christmas Day as Bernard James Smith.
Mr Smith, known locally as Jim, was 83 and lived on Shakespeare Road, Stafford.
Mr Smith’s nieces, who continue to receive support from specially trained officers, have released the following statement:
“The family are finding it extremely difficult at this time but we would just like to say that our uncle Jim was very independent and enjoyed regular visits to the Highfields Social Club where he met his friends on a daily basis.”
A post mortem examination established the cause of his death was multiple chest injuries.
The 22-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident remains in police custody for questioning.
Tributes have been paid to Mr Smith on social medial.
Kelsey Hickson, posting on Christmas Day said: "This gentleman was a lovely person, it truly is a great shame! Rest in peace, there'll be a pint waiting on your usual table tonight."
Fre Smith said: "As a member of the extended family I would just like to thank the Police for all their hard work and to all of you who have wished us well.
"I very much appreciate your sentiments at this very sad time. Thank you all so much."
