THERE were mixed fortunes for Eccleshall teams on Saturday as two Pershall Park sides chased Staffs FA Vase glory.
The first team chalked up a much- needed win when edging home 1-0 at home to Redgate Clayton, but the seconds crashed out 5-0 at Audley.
As for the Pershall Park first team they moved into the next round of the county competition with a workmanlike performance against a competitive Redgate side.
There was little to trouble either keeper in the early stages as both sides missed chances.
Redgate’s Andy Sherratt fired over with a free kick, before Eccleshall’s Anthony Marshall headed into the waiting arms of Audley keeper Mick Wilcox.
Eccleshall should have taken the lead when Dan King found space in the box but he did not make contact, although the ball beat Wilcox and struck a visiting defender.
King gathered the rebound but fired wide.
Following two corners, Eccleshall had another good opportunity but Marshall miss-kicked his effort.
Jake Stribling also missed for Redgate just before the break.
Eccleshall applied pressure at the start of the second period with Tyrone Wilson having a cross cleared over the bar. Dan Counter’s header from the corner was cleared off the line.
However, the Eagles finally broke the deadlock on 61 minutes when Dan Fenton crossed from the left and King supplied the finishing touch.
Eccleshall almost made it 2-0, but Dan Colclough’s shot was cleared off the line, before a 30 yard effort from Mark Hall just cleared the bar.
At the other end, Sam Humphreys had a shot go just wide.
Redgate continued to press in the closing stages, but Eccleshall held firm to take their place in round two and a home tie against Lichfield City next month.
Not so lucky were Eccleshall second team who suffered a second half collapse away to Audley.
Inflicting the damage on Eccleshall were Mathew Barlow (two), Richard Beech, Jordan Beech and an own goal.
Eccleshall’s North West Counties team are without a fixture on Saturday, while the second team entertain AFC Leek Town in the Staffs Senior League (2.30pm).
On Wednesday, Eccleshall AFC are at home to Kidsgrove Athletic in the Leek Cup (7.30pm).
