A BOROUGH councillor has started a petition to replace a Hixon post box which disappeared overnight.

Councillor Jean Tabernor said the box vanished about five weeks ago and the village now has only one postbox.

The box was on Walnut Crest where there are a lot of elderly residents nearby.

Councillor Tabernor said: “We have got a lot of sheltered bungalows and the residents can’t walk down the hill and back up again to post a letter. It’s a steep incline.

“There’s only one other postbox in Hixon and it’s a big village. It needs more than one letter box. People are not going to be able to post their letters very easily. They just can’t get to the other letter box

“ I spoke to Royal Mail and they told me it would cost £3,00 to replace it and £1,600 to pay someone to empty it and all they get is an average of five letters a day.

“They say they are not going to replace it – they were adamant. I’m not very happy.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We are investigating as a matter of urgency and apologise for the inconvenience to customers.”
