Narrow defeat as season ends for relegated Stafford Rangers

THE SEASON closed on relegated Stafford Rangers with a narrow 2-1 defeat at Whitby Town.

Rangers, who had won their previous two league games, took a 15th minute lead through Lewis Chalmers who headed home a Jimmy McCarthy corner.

But their North-East hosts levelled on 27 minutes when Shane Henry took full advantage of a defensive error.

Whitby grabbed the lead midway through the second half. Tom Portas's crossed was not held by Boro keeper Andrew Jones and Graeme Armstrong headed home.

Joe Ballinger cleared off the line to thwart Whitby in the closing stages, before Andy Griffiths went close for Rangers late on.

This was Rangers' final game of a very disappointing season and next term they will be playing their football in the fourth tier of non league football, Evo-Stik division one(South).

In the MIDLAND COMBINATON Premier, champions Brocton rounded off their splendid campaign with a 3-0 away win at Alvis with sub Richie Allen scoring the third and the Badgers 100th league goal of the season. Also on the mark were Paul McMahon and Gary Fife.

Stafford Town went down 3-1 at Bolehall and the Reds have one more league game to play before facing Atherstone in the Les James Challenge Cup final at the Bescot Stadium, Walsall on May 7.
