STONE’S swimming pool is set to reopen within days after a broken pipe put it out of action for more than two months.

Alleyne’s Academy, which runs the pool at Alleyne’s Sports Centre in conjunction with Stafford Borough Council, is carrying out the repair work.

A Stafford Borough Council spokesman said today: “They expect it to be open as soon after the school Christmas holidays as possible.”

The pool was forced to close in late October and a “catastrophic failure” in a circulation pipe was diagnosed.

The repair bill has soared to more than £55,000. This includes work to repair electrics damaged by water from the broken pipe, which cost around £12,000, which was covered by insurance.

Stafford Borough Council has had to find £26,000, which was not allocated in its budget, and Alleyne’s Academy will pay the remainder.

Councillor Mike Smith, Stafford Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure, said: “The pool is nearly 40 years old and because of its age costly problems such as this are likely to arise.”
