The upsurge, which came to light in official Government statistics, meant that there were 750 local places up for grabs during the past 12 months, compared to 420 in 2009/10.

Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy, said: “This is fantastic news for young people and for businesses throughout Stafford. “Nationally we have seen a 60 per cent increase in the number of apprenticeships and here in Stafford we are doing even better.

“More than 300 extra people are benefiting from an apprenticeship this year thanks to the support from this Government.” It is not known how many of the apprenticeships went to local young people aged 16-24. Across Britain, youth unemployment has risen above the 1.1 million mark.

However, Skills Minister John Hayes is planning to address the situation by offering employers with up to 50 employees up to £1,500 in reward for taking on a young apprentice.

The Coalition Government also hopes to create hundreds of thousands of jobs for young people through a £1billion scheme which will see up to half their wages being paid by the taxpayer.

Mr Lefroy, added: “‘I welcome the cash bonuses for small firms who take on young apprentices and I urge companies in Stafford to take up this opportunity.

“Before now, too many businesses have been put off taking on an apprentice because of unnecessary bureaucracy and red tape. It is therefore good news for businesses and young people alike that the government is streamlining the system.

“The record rise in apprenticeship numbers, particularly in Advanced ‘A’ level equivalent qualifications, also shows the Government’s commitment to helping employers train the skilled workers they need to build a stronger economy and sustainable growth.” Among the local firms who have announced apprenticeships this year are pharmaceutical wholesaler Phoenix Distribution Services (PDS) in Dunston, Stone power company ABB and Stafford’s largest employer, Alstom, which now has more than 100 apprentices in its power generation, power transmission and transport sectors.
