Council boss pledge to fight Stafford Hospital downgrade

Written byRobin Scott

STAFFORD’S council boss has pledged to oppose proposals to ‘unfairly downgrade’ services at Stafford Hospital.

Mike Heenan

Leader of Stafford Borough Council Mike Heenan told the Newsletter he was ‘devastated’ by the announcement by healthcare regulator Monitor’s Contingency Planning Team which lays out plans to remove a plethora of services currently provided by Stafford Hospital.

“This will have serious implications for our community and it is very unfair on the public of Stafford that they are penalised for the failures of the previous board,” said Councillor Heenan.

“After all the traumas and difficulties this hospital has faced, the continual blow to morale of the hard working members of staff, and the fact the hospital has made great strides to improve performance - demonstrated by recent statistics - this announcement will be seen as extremely unfair to all those involved in wanting to, and trying their best to, provide key hospital services to the people of Stafford,” he said.

Councillor Heenan said he would be publically opposing the proposals.

“I will be lobbying whoever I need to, whenever I need to and wherever I need to, to fight this unfair downgrading of health provision for Stafford and surrounding areas.”
