Eccleshall fire sparked by radio

A FAULTY radio sparked a kitchen fire near Eccleshall on Sunday.

Fire and rescue crews from Eccleshall, Ashley and Stone were called at around 4pm when the blaze broke out in the Blackwater area.

An elderly female had made her way out of the house before the arrival of the fire crew and was treated for smoke inhalation before being taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

Now, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to check all electrical appliances or get an electrician to do it for you.

Station Manager Neil Pedersen said: “This week is Electrical Safety Week and we are urging members of the public to ensure that their electrics are in good working order and are used properly.” “It is more and more important with the increased amounts of electrical appliances and devices in the modern home that we get into a regular routine in checking for any signs of damage or defects before they cause either a fire or electrical shock.” “Statistics show that half of all accidental house fires in 2010/11 were caused by faulty or misused electrical equipment.”
