TOO many wreaths are being laid at Stone’s annual Remembrance Sunday tribute, spoiling the atmosphere, a resident has claimed.
More than 70 were laid at the memorial last November by ex-servicemen, local groups and residents.
But Stone resident Dorothy Wilson has said a more fitting way to spend the time would be to read out the names of the fallen engraved on the High Street monument.
Mrs Wilson said: “The service around the war memorial is a moving tribute by the people of Stone. The atmosphere, for me, is spoiled by the excessive number of wreaths laid by nearly every group and organisation in the town.
“Surely their presence there is tribute enough?” She has contacted Stone Town Council with her concerns.
But councillors say they do not wish to stop people laying wreaths.
Councillor Joyce Farnham, a member of the Stone Royal British Legion branch, said: “It is wonderful that people want to lay wreaths and we wouldn’t want to stop them.
"They go to a lot of trouble and it is a wonderful tribute that everybody thinks so very much of Remembrance Sunday in Stone.”
