FIREFIGHTERS took to boats to rescue a herd of sheep trapped in deep flood water off the A51 in Rugeley.

Fire crews were called to the Rugeley bypass around 8am this morning after reports the river had burst its banks and a number of sheep had become trapped in the ensuing flood.
After closing the road firefighters used boats to reach the sheep entering the water in dry suits to guide and lift them to dry land.

More than 30 sheep were rescued with four dying on the scene.
