FLOODING issues continued to plague drivers in Stafford with a major route through the town likely to remain closed over the coming weekend.
The A51 London Road near Weston was closed on Christmas Eve after water from an overflowing brook made it increasingly difficult to pass.
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport Mike Maryon said: "Our highways team put up flood warning signs at the site on the A51 last Saturday but needed to close the road on Christmas Eve to ensure people’s safety was not put at risk.
"Diversion routes are signposted from both directions and the road remains closed for the time being," he said. "We will be monitoring the situation closely as more wet weather is forecast over the weekend."
He said highways teams had been on standby throughout the Christmas period, checking gullies were clear on the road adding: "We would ask drivers to bear with us and follow the diversion routes until the road can be opened again."
