A FLOODED major route through Stafford closed for more than a week is currently being cleared with tankers and pumps.
Staffordshire County Council closed the A51 at Weston on Christmas Eve and have kept it closed over the holiday period.
Diversions put in place around the blocked area will remain in place until the road is ready to reopen.
Resident Ken Pyatt, 88, said the closure had caused ‘chaos and mayhem’ in the area and expressed concerns that people were continuing to drive through the flood even though it was closed.
“It’s absolute chaos,” he said. “I did a survey of that road for the county council a few years ago and 15,000 vehicles use that road.”
My Pyatt said motorists were ignoring the road closed signs and driving through the flood anyway.
“I haven’t seen a policeman there since it closed,” he said. “There should be someone there stopping people.”
A spokesman for Staffordshire County Council said she expected the road to be reopened later today.
