Hixon pensioner seriously injured after great Haywoods HGV collision

A HIXON pensioner had to be cut free from his car after a collision with an HGV on the A51 at Great Haywood yesterday.

Staffordshire Police were called to the incident at around 3.50pm on Thursday at the A51 junction with Tolldish Lane involving a silver Mazda 6 towing a caravan and a red Scania HGV.

A spokesman for the police said: “The driver of the Mazda, a 68-year-old man from Hixon, was trapped and had to be cut free from the car by officers from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“He suffered serious injuries and was flown by air ambulance to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire where he remains in a stable condition.”

He said the driver of the HGV, a 49-year-old man from Market Drayton was uninjured in the crash.

The road remained closed until just after 10.30pm whiles officers completed an examination of the scene and the vehicles were recovered.
