Space for all at Doxey

Roland Hynd

I WALK my dogs every day on Doxey Marshes and it is a wonderful place where the dogs can have a good run.

Recently I was approached by a gentleman who asked me to put my dogs on the lead. He did this without introducing himself or telling me by what authority he was speaking.

When I asked him why, all he said was that it was the law! If he had explained that there were rare nesting birds nearby, I would have understood but to have someone telling me I was breaking the law annoyed me and I am afraid that I was a little short with him.

The area that is used by the public is less than about 10 per cent of the marshes which leaves about 90 per cent for their birds and wildlife. Surely that is enough without spoiling it for the dog walkers or would they prefer, as I suspect, to stop access to the public (except birdwatchers) altogether!
