A HISTORIC brewery site at the heart of Stone is set to take on a new life following decades of disuse.
The former Joules Maltings will be transformed under new plans submitted by owner Hill and Swift proposing two new retail units with apartments above and a new-build apartment block directly opposite on Adies Alley.
Architect Carl Croft, of Croft Architecture, said Stone was historically a brewing town and it was important that was reflected in the designs which incorporate elements of the Maltings interiors into the plans.
“We are proposing a stunning space, utilising features including the original timber beams," he said. "Ideally this could be used by a company selling local produce, including beer, to reinforce the link to craft brewing in Stone.”
The planning application for the building on an old garage site opposite the maltings incorporates five apartments with height varying from three and a half storeys at the rear to two storeys at the front.
Mr Croft said Aides Alley was an important site connecting the high street with the town centre.
“Currently it is visually uninspiring but we believe these plans will open up the town centre and take away the barrier between the town centre and the attractive canalside area near to the Star Lock," said Mr Croft.
The Maltings were on the brink of demolition in the 1990s but saved when English Heritage gave them Listed Building status.
