Iona the tawny owl was found by a motorway patrol officer near junction 11 of the M6 last week who called Haughton-based The Owl Experience.

Owner Andrew Campbell originally thought she had been hit by a car but a vet found evidence of lead poisoning which could only have come from a pellet.

Mr Campbell, pictured, said: “The bird was on its back, it was practically dead.

Unfortunately she had to have her eye out.” Iona will need to be hand fed for the rest of her life.

“She’s a thousand per cent better,” said Mr Campbell.

The Owl Experience is self-funded and offers work experience to volunteers. It can be contacted on 01785 250581 or 07980 977717.
