Councillor Barry Stamp, 60, said he had become increasingly disillusioned with the party since the General Election in 2010 when he stood for Stafford, citing issues including student tuition fees, the bedroom tax and HS2.

He has now cancelled his party subscription.

Councillor Stamp has served as a Liberal Democrat councillor for more than 20 years since being elected in 1991 when the group had 12 members on the authority.

He stood for Parliament for the party four times, pledging three years ago to scrap university tuition fees.

When the coalition was formed that policy was ditched leaving Mr Stamp dissatisfied.

BIN THERE DONE THAT ... Councillor Stamp has decided it is time to move on.
