Speaking after a 'question time event' hosted by Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, Kate Godfrey said a report by independent regulator Monitor's expert review team, which called the hospital trust “unsustainable in its current form”, was “disappointing”.

“It’s disappointing that the independent panel feel Mid-Staffs is clinically and financially unsustainable in its current form,” she said. “Although I’m pleased to see the panel acknowledge the quality of medical care and improvements in clinical performance.

She said: “We’re now waiting to see which services the panel will decide ought to be protected.

“People in Staffordshire need A&E services on their doorstep, not twenty miles away.”

She said over the coming months she would be working alongside all parties to try and protect services in Stafford added she would be pressing Monitor's contingency planning team to understand the importance of a fully-functioning A&E department and what that meant to the community.
