CAMPAIGNERS bidding to "keep Westbridge Park green" have handed a petition containing more than 4,000 signatures to Stafford Borough Council.
Council chief executive Ian Thompson received the petition from Stone councillors Rob Kenney and Jill Hood on Tuesday, a week ahead of a presentation on the Plan for Stafford Borough which will be given to Stone Town Council.
Proposals for a mixed use development at Stone's Westbridge Park contained in the plan have sparked strong feelings from town residents.
In total 4,771 people signed the Keep Westbridge Green petition calling on the borough council to scrap the mixed use development proposal.
But others have supported proposals for a new leisure centre to be developed at the park a facility Councillor Kenney has said would be better suited to Stone Business Park. Some have accused campaigners of scaremongering.
The Keep Westbridge Green campaign and the Plan for Stafford Borough are due to be discussed by Stone town councillors on Tuesday. The meeting, which starts at 7pm at Alleyne's High School's main hall, is open to the public.
