Residents 'let down for years'

Angry residents say they feel ignored and let down as highways bosses are refusing to do anything about the state of their Stafford road despite years of desperate pleas.

Generic Online news 3Householders in Border Way, Burton Manor, have been calling for for their road to be widened or parking to be installed for more than five years..

One fed-up homeowner says she is so sick of worrying about her car being damaged or being hit with a parking fine she is considering moving house.

And another neighbour says the street has just been forgotten about and fears nothing will ever be done to improve it.

It follows a county council statement that there will be no work undertaken in the near future because it would cost too much money.

The problems arise because some people have to park their cars in the road but the carriageway is so narrow that bin lorries struggle to get past. They are forced to drive up the grass verge on the other side of the road, churning up the grass and creating a mud bath.

Other vehicles have also struggled to get past and some parked cars have suffered damage.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue has also written to residents asking them not to park in the road amid fears emergency vehicles will not be able to gain access.

But those who have parked their cars up the kerbs to avoid the problem have been warned they could face fines for blocking the footpaths.

Resident Josie Wright, who lives with her husband Mark and two children, said: “The grass verge in the road is completely churned up. All we want is for it to be concreted to create parking or dug up so the road can be widened. We have asked time and time again. We moved here in 2001 and nothing has been done.

“Last year the county council said they would look into it.” Another neighbour, Brenda Hancock, told the Newsletter: “I feel let down that nothing has happened.

A Staffordshire County Council spokesman said: “Highways officers have been considering the request from residents of Border Way to widen the road so that on street parking can be provided. We apologise for not updating residents during this process. It has been decided however that this is not feasible at this time. The cost of this project would be considerable “Forward programmes of work are to be prioritised shortly and this request will be included in that process.”
