Sporting chance for Holmcroft centre scheme

Written byGail Atkinson

REVISED plans have been submitted to demolish Holmcroft community centre and replace it with a new one.

Blueprint

The original proposals were were sent back to the drawing board in July last year after planners said they needed more thought.

Members of Stafford Borough Council’s planning committee liked the idea of regenerating Holmcroft Youth and Community Centre but were concerned about the loss of the outside sports area and lack of detail.

Sport England and the council’s head of leisure objected to the plans, which included partial demolition of the current centre.

Now the centre has put forward plans to completely demolish it and provide more sporting facilities.

A report on the new plans said: “We have altered the proposals to include a new single storey only leisure centre incorporating a larger multi purpose hall which can accommodate most sports activities.

“The existing multi-use games area (Muga), which is to be removed to accommodate the proposal, will be rebuilt to the south of the site.”

The proposed new Muga will be smaller than the existing one but the shortfall is made up by the improved hall.

The changes mean the whole of the existing community centre will have to be demolished. It will be replaced by a new single-storey building for community projects in the area.

The plans are set to go before the planning committee by April 25.
