Violinist Charlotte Howdle, 12, will be the youngest competitor hoping for honours in the Staffordshire Performing Arts event, while Dominic Sterland, 14, hopes to impress the judges on the viola.

The two, both pupils at Stafford Grammar School, are among nine musicians aged between 12 and 18 who will battle it out in the final after seeing off other competitors in the preliminary round.

It is the first time either has entered, while their school has also chalked up a first with two of its students reaching the final in the same year.

Charlotte is working towards grade eight and is a member of the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, while Dominic will shortly gain grade eight in viola, violin and classical guitar and plays for the City of Birmingham Symphony Youth Orchestra.
