A SUSPICIOUS package found in a Stafford phone box saw sections of the town centre closed off today but turned out to be harmless.

Police responded to a report at 11.30 and cordoned off an area near Stafford Street and Princess Street as a safety precaution while specially trained officers attended.
A spokesman for the police said officers conducted an examination of the package, found it to be safe and weren’t treating it as suspicious.
"Thankfully this incident has been resolved quickly and safely and I would like to thank those affected by the incident for their support and cooperation with the cordon which was put in place to ensure the safety of the public,” she said. “We take reports of this nature seriously and are always ready to respond proportionately to the information received.
“Inquiries will now continue to establish who was responsible for placing the package in the phone box."
The police would not disclose the contents of the package.
