A NEW 240-tonne bridge has been installed as part of the key new i54 scheme bringing business to Staffordshire.

The single-span accommodation bridge was winched into place over the M54 as part of a major overnight engineering operation at the weekend.

The new bridge will replace an existing bridge on Middle Lane, which needs to be moved to allow access to the business park. It will be used for construction traffic over the next few months and will be open to members of the public next year.

The bridge is part of major plans to continue developing the i54 scheme, where industry giant Jaguar will move to next year.

i54 is a join venture between Staffordshire County Council, South Staffordshire Council and Wolverhampton City Council.

Councillor Mike Maryon, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Projects like these are the nuts and bolts of the i54 South Staffordshire scheme.

“Our engineers worked through the night to move the bridge into place and I am delighted that everything went to plan.”
