University event bids to boost innovation and growth

FIRMS FIXED on beating the recession are invited to a free business boosting event in Stafford this week.

Staffordshire University is hosting Innovation and Growth 2012 on Wednesday morning at the Beaconside campus.

The event, aimed at both large and small businesses, will include presenta- tions from the Technology Strategy Board ( TSB), the UK’s innovation agency which provides funding streams to enable businesses to undertake pre-market and prototype work.

Visitors can learn more about the bidding process and identify what funding streams are suitable for which companies.

The event is supported by BIG, a consortium between Staffordshire University, Keele University, Keele Science Park and North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce.

Sandra Booth, BIG strategic board director and director of enterprise and commercial development at Staffordshire University, said: “The Government is investing in businesses but this money has to generate results and they are actively looking to support areas of growth.

“It’s significant that the Technology Strategy Board will be attending this event in recognition that this area has been identified as one which is ripe for growth.

“This really is an event that local businesses can’t afford to miss - it will connect partners and networks and provide funding opportunities that will help transform great ideas into the growth products and services of tomorrow.”

Vice-Chancellor Michael Gunn will open the event and keynote speakers include Maitland Hislop, chair of the Local Enterprise Partnership and leading voice behind Digital Staffordshire, a new initiative to stimulate growth in the ICT and digital sector.

There will also be contributions from a number of companies who have bene- fited through their work with local universities.

Anyone interested in attending should register for their free place, by calling 01782 294178 or emailing forbusiness@staffs.ac.uk.
